Caspar David Friedrich

Master of the bleak landscape, Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), is one of the actors of German romanticism. This contemporary of Johan Wolfgang Von Goethe did not have an easy life, continually peppered with mourning. In search of transcendence, the artist is known for representing nature in its mystical and spiritual dimensions. More than beauty, the sublime is in question in the works of Caspar Friedrich, very far from the realist currents expressed in the schools of the landscape at that time in France and England.
